Whitgift – Independent Schools National Champions

20 of the top teams from UK Independent Schools descended on Carnoustie this weekend to battle for the title of best Independent School. Two glorious days of golf where the weather was kind to the players. This is the second time the National finals have been half at the Open Championship course where we were given a welcome reception from the hotel and course staff.
Day one saw the players take on the Burnside course. After the first days play Wellington, Millfield and Whitgift were all on the same score of 139 ( best 2 gross scores from each team of 3 players). A young Birkdale team were 5 shots behind on 144, followed by Haberdashers, Abingdon & Merchiston a few shots off. Individual leaders after the first days play were Edoardo Lipparelli on  68, followed by William Aldred, Jamie Li and George Mullins all with a score of 69. All to play for on the second days play on the Championship course.
All players and teachers enjoyed a buffet dinner in the Carnoustie Hotel, followed by prize giving for the teachers competition. All team received their trophies for reaching the national finals.
After a few days of mist rolling in from the sea the final days play on the Championship course saw a glorious day with the sun shining. Players went out in reverse leader board order to decide the team and individual winners. Jamie Li from Millfield came in with the best score of the day with a 69, a total 2 day score of 138 taking the individual trophy along with a GALVIN GREEN  top and a personalised sterling silver centre belt buckle from Heraldic Gems. Trophies and prizes were also awarded to 2nd place George Mullins (Whitgift) 141, William Aldred (Haberdashers) 141, Harvey Byers (Whitgift) 142 & Edouardo Lipparrelli (Wellington) 142.
All players received Gold, Silver or Bronze medals according to their final standing
The top 3 teams were all within a chance to take the title.  Whitgift edged ahead with 2 good scores of 72 to secure the trophy for the first time. Winners last time at Carnoustie, Wellington took the runners up trophy.

Finals Format and Rules

Stroke Play Championship for the Trophy
1. CONDITIONS OF PLAY
(a) The Championship shall be played by Stroke Play over 36 holes at the Finals Venues
(b) The Individual winner shall be the competitor who returns the lowest score over 36 holes.
In the event of a tie for first place after 36 holes the deciding score will be on count back over the last 9 holes. In the event of a tie after count back there will be a sudden death playoff on the 18th hole until a winner is decided
(c) The Team event will be the best 2 scores from each team each day
(d) Parents and teachers may watch from a suitable distance but may not interfere with play or give advice
(g) Serious breeches of golf etiquette may result in disqualification
2. TROPHIES AND PRIZES
Teams
The winning School / College (will hold the ISGA National Finals Trophy for one year)
Runners Up School / College ( will hold the Trophy for one year)
Individuals
1st best gross score after 36 holes.
2nd best gross score over 36 holes.
3rd, 4th & 5th best gross scores over 36 holes.

 

Trophies and Prizes will be presented as soon as possible after the end of play, when all winners will be expected to be present.
Trophies and prizes not collected at prize giving will be kept over for next year’s event
3. QUALIFICATION
To be eligible to compete all players must be:-
Under the age of 19 at 00:00 hours on 1st January in the year in which the Championship is to be played, and be a full time student at the school/college
4. ENTRIES
All schools will have qualified in the ISGA Schools Matchplay stages to compete at the National Finals. see entry 12 for extra teams
5.  WINNERS RESPONSIBILITIES
The Winning Schools will be responsible for the Trophies from the time it is presented until it is relinquished. They shall also ensure that the Trophy is returned to the ISGA in readiness for the following year’s event.
6.RULES AS PER THE R&A
Local rules will be supplied on the day of the competition and in the itinerary sent to all schools / colleges
7.CANCELLATION
The ISGA will not be held responsible for any cancellation due to unforeseen weather or acts of God. All practical arrangements will be made to complete the tournament
Schools / Colleges that reach the National Finals must attend the finals except under exceptional circumstances.
Schools / Colleges that fail to attend may not be invited to play in future events for a period of 2 years

8.BOYS AND GIRLS
After much deliberation and contact with all the major golf unions and the R&A the following applies
Boys play off the white tees (Medal tees of the day), Girls off the Red tees (Ladies tees of the day)
Gross scores count for both with no allowance

The Girls will play for a separate Individual trophy

 

9.RANGE FINDERS
No ipods / mobile devises maybe used during playing rounds
Measuring devices for distance ONLY may be used at the permission of the host course.  Slope adjusting devices will not be permitted, and any player found using them will be disqualified from the event.

10. ETIQUETTE
Good etiquette is required by all players and schools. Serious breach of etiquette could result in individuals or teams not being invited to play in future competitions.
No schools / Colleges may use our events for any commercial gain or approach any individual with a view to poaching. Breach of above will lead to suspension of school from ISGA competitions for 3 years subject to review.
The ISGA reserve the right to disallow individuals or teams from participating in any of their competitions if previous breaches of the above have taken place
Please observe the dress code at the host clubs as all students not only represent the ISGA but their school / College
The decision of the organisers is Final
11.CHILD PROTECTION – PHOTOGRAPHY
The Independent Schools Golf Association recognises the need to ensure the welfare and safety of all children and young people in sport.
In accordance with our child protection policy we will not permit photographs, video or other images of children and young people to be taken without the consent of their school
The Independent Schools Golf Association will take all necessary measures to ensure these images are used solely for the purposes they are intended. For example use on the ISGA websites, golf magazines reporting results.
All Schools / Colleges must be aware of the Children in Golf Child Protection Policy and Procedures and guidelines in relation to away competition/tournaments.
All Schools / Colleges acknowledge that the Independent Schools Golf Association will not be liable in the event of any accident or loss during any competition/tournament.
Emergency First Aid / Medical Treatment
All Schools / Colleges must have medical procedures in place for the needs of each individual that takes part in any ISGA competition.
By entering an ISGA competition all schools / Colleges agree that photographic consent has been given for their pupils

The National Finals will be  a qualifying event for handicap purposes under the sanction of England Golf and the Scottish Golf Union

12. Extra Teams

2 extra teams have been invited to play in the National finals this year.

The ISGA Scottish Foursomes

The Blue Group Invitational – co-sanctioned with ISGA Spain

The winning team from the ISGA Scottish Foursomes will be eligible to field a team of 3 players. Should the winning team already qualified for the National Finals a place will be offered to the runners up who may play for Individual trophies only

The winning team from the Blue Group Invitational at San Roque will be eligible to play as long as the team are all at the same Independent School. If not they may still play for individual trophies.
